Mandatory Retention Based on FCAT Scores

Click here for a one-page flyer about mandatory retention (PDF format).

Talking points on mandatory retention:

bulletResearch on effects of grade retention shows that any gains in test scores are short-lived, that children who're retained are less likely to graduate, and that behavior problems increase when children are not with their age peers.
bulletParents should have the opportunity for input into the decision-making process as well as a right of appeal to an independent body when the harms of retention outweigh any potential benefit.
bulletIn addition to the current so-called "good cause" exemptions from mandatory retention, there should be provisions for children who've suffered trauma such as death of a parent, homelessness, major accident or illness, etc.
bulletIt costs about $6000 for a child to repeat a grade. Why not use some of that money for extra supports to meet individual needs and keep children with their age peers?
