Mandatory Retention Based on FCAT Scores
Click here for a one-page flyer about
mandatory retention (PDF format).
Talking points on mandatory retention:
 | Research on effects of grade retention shows that any gains in test scores
are short-lived, that children who're retained are less likely to graduate,
and that behavior problems increase when children are not with their age
peers. |
 | Parents should have the opportunity for input into the decision-making
process as well as a right of appeal to an independent body when the harms of
retention outweigh any potential benefit. |
 | In addition to the current so-called "good cause" exemptions from
mandatory retention, there should be provisions for children who've suffered
trauma such as death of a parent, homelessness, major accident or illness,
etc. |
 | It costs about $6000 for a child to repeat a grade. Why not use some of
that money for extra supports to meet individual needs and keep children with
their age peers? |
