By A Sarasota Parent
My son has a small learning disability. He does not and has never done well at test taking. He has never passed the FCAT even though he receives good grades in school (3.0). He is going into the 11th grade and he is a very bright boy. He has a lot going for him with his athletic ability. He really has a chance to go to college on a football scholarship. I have been paying for tutors over the years (since 3rd grade) to try to get him ready each year for the FCAT. Last year, I paid over $10,000 to Sylvan Learning Systems and both my son and I really thought he was going to do well. Well, once again, he failed both the reading and math portion of the test. My son, who is so very gifted in so many different areas of his life is now ready to quit school altogether. What is a parent to do? I have done everything in my power and have enrolled him in every class I can think of but we have no success. Only 35% of the kids in his school passed the FCAT. What is this saying about our school system? Many children left behind……..I am so very scared for him. |
