Support open, broad-based assessment of learning -- contribute to FCAR.

My son also was reduced to tears over the 4th grade writing FCAT. Long story short, the teacher threatened him by telling him that if he didn't write and finish the assignment within the time parameters she would have to write him a plan (the correct term escapes me at the moment). After she told him that at the next timed writing lesson he wrote "This is all I am writing so go ahead and write me up." He ultimately did fine on the FCAT writing and even though not finishing it he received a 4.5. But, 4th grade was not a one of his favorite years and he still thinks he is not a good writer. The school he is going to has a program where a volunteer called a listener comes in and sits with the student once a week on a pull-out basis. This, and the support of previous teachers that allowed him to come and sit in their classes when he just couldn't handle being in his own classroom, helped him get through 4th grade.
