Below is an email I sent to a group of fellow educators about the latest book
by Susan Ohanian, When Childhood Meets NCLB. Feel free to copy it or link
to it. I've also included a PDF of the first two pages.
--John Perry

Dear Friends,
I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Susan Ohanian, but if you aren’t,
you should be.
Ohanian is a teacher, author, and tireless activist. She maintains a
web site that has the most amazing
collection of news, commentary, research, humor and more. I don’t know if I can
explain it, you just have to check it out. (She sends email updates when she
posts new items to her site, which is usually daily. Everyone should sign up for
those.)
She’s written some great books, among them One Size Fits Few: The Folly of
Educational Standards and with Kathy Emery, Why is Corporate America
Bashing Our Public Schools?
But the reason I’m writing is to urge you to get a copy of her new book, When
Childhood Collides with NCLB. Ohanian arranged for the book to be published
by the Vermont Society for the Study of Education with no royalties going to
her. You can purchase her other books on Amazon.com, but right now the only way
to get When Childhood Collides with NCLB is send her a check for $8.95,
which includes shipping (send your check to Susan Ohanian, P. O. Box 26,
Charlotte, VT 05445). She’s even mailing them out herself.
The book is written in a distinctive format. The left column is a poem by
Ohanian and the right column consists of news, commentary, quotes, and other
items that inspired the poetry. Ohanian’s poetry is by turns heartwarming,
heartbreaking, inspiring, and full of righteous anger, usually all on the same
page.
She has this little item about the book at her site:
http://susanohanian.org/show_nclb_outrages.html?id=3344.
I have attached a PDF of the first two pages,
just to give you a hint of what the book is like. Go ahead, order. Trust me,
there is no better way to spend $8.95.
Sincerely,
John Perry
