A Teenager's Complaint: "Gypped out of a good education" by FCAT

My son is a sophomore in high school. Last night he was working on attempting to solve Algebra II Honors problems in his textbook when he closed the book, exasperated. I asked him what the problem was and he stated that he did not understand the work. This was odd coming from a student who has maintained an A average in Algebra. He said that he feels that his teachers are rushing through the textbooks to make up for what they missed while preparing for the FCAT. He then stated that it happens every year at the end of the year, the teachers pushing to finish the required curriculum because they spend so much time on the FCAT. He said that he feels gypped out of a good education because of a test that could "make or break" him. We continued the conversation with him stating that he was worried that his grades this semester would be compromised because he felt so rushed. Then he chuckled and said, "I guess my grades don't really matter anyway, if I don't pass the FCAT I won't even graduate from high school." How sad that the hard work our kids put in each day doesn't really matter unless they pass the FCAT.

How sad that the hard work our teachers put in each day doesn't really matter unless their students pass the FCAT. My son's biggest fear...remedial classes just because he didn't pass the FCAT. This has to stop. The FCAT DOES NOT measure how well our children are doing in school.
