FCAT mania preempts Black History Month!

More from "A Florida teacher"
March, 2005

I had a meeting with my principal last week to discuss his "concerns about my teaching style." One of his biggest concerns was that I had "wasted" an entire 50 minute class period on an activity involving African American poets in which the students had to select their favorite poem from a handout furnished by the Newspapers in Education program and explain its significance to them. Although the activity involved identifying the author's purpose and main idea, it was not an "FACT specific" activity! The most ironic note in this is that while my principal and I are both white, this atrocity was reported to him by a black administrator.

Where will it end?
